Did you know, when buyers are house hunting they typically nickname the houses by the door color? Truth. That’s the power of curb appeal and first impressions!!

Here are some quick tips to perk your property with a front door facelift.
1. Wearing rubber gloves, wash oils and dirt thoroughly with TSP. Pay special attention to around handle where grubby kids touch the door. Rinse with warm water. Let dry.
2. Scrape any loose old paint; spackle holes and uneven spots. Let dry.
3. Rough up that door with a liberal sanding so the paint has something to stick to. This is key! Don’t cheat this step.
4. Tape that puppy up.
5. Using exterior semi-gloss, lightly prime the areas that you spackled, dark spots, or spots that chipped away to raw wood.
6. LIGHTLY brush all the detail work. Remember, there will be 2 coats. Too much paint leads to running or sagging paint, delays dry time, and can cause bubbling.
7. Roll the rest of the door out with a mini roller for smooth surfaces. If you have to brush, do inside panels first, horizontal lines second, vertical panels last. *long strokes are best. Let that sucker dry for a couple of hours.
8. Second coat. Remove tape immediately and touch up/clean up.
9. Be a hero and do your back door for extra credit.
10. ????????????????????????????Enjoy!!

*pro-tips: paint early and keep the door open all day. Seriously- all day. This will allow the paint to cure and not stick in the frame, ruining your paint job. Also, don’t paint in the sun, this will make for streaky, ribbed lines. Overcast days are the best.
*not pictured: paint the side of the door with the hinges, NOT the side with the locks (this would be painted with your interior paint)
*Full disclosure: Anne-Lise is not a licensed nor bonded contractor. However, she does come from three generations of painters, and her parents used to make her paint their rental properties during summers growing up the second she could hold both a paintbrush and her blanky at the same time.
